Teen Mental Health & Substance Abuse
In the United States, many teenagers deal with either mental health disorders or substance abuse; the two are frequently co-occurring. When young people deal with these issues at a young age, they can progressively worsen, affecting their physical health, mental well-being, and brain development.
Teens need treatment that’s age-appropriate and specialized.
Risk factors for mental health and substance abuse in teenagers and adolescents can include:
- Peer pressure and social influences
- Exposure to bullying
- Instability at home
- A lack of family resources
More than 40% of teens currently report feeling down or depressed, and almost 30% of all teens experience signs of impaired mental well-being.
Among the most common mental health disorders in teens are anxiety, depression, and eating disorders.
Having an untreated mental health disorder significantly raises the risk of substance abuse. This is true in all age groups—not just teens.
There are complicated interactions that occur between mental health and substance abuse. For example, a teen with an undiagnosed or untreated mental health disorder may use substances to self-medicate and feel better.
The long-term detrimental effects quickly overshadow the benefits they feel in the short term.
Teens are at an especially high risk of addiction when they briefly experiment with drugs or alcohol because their brains are still developing until age 25.
If your teen is experiencing mental health or substance use problems, help is available. Portum Behavioral Health specializes in working with this population. If you’re looking for a Clinton drug rehab center for teens, we are nearby in Annandale, New Jersey.
What Are the Red Flags In Teens?
It’s tough if you’re a parent, caretaker, or loved one to identify red flags of mental health or substance use issues in teens. During the teen years, hormonal and life changes can mean shifts in moods and other symptoms that can look similar to a deeper issue.
Some of the symptoms you might watch for that could indicate a teen is experiencing an issue requiring treatment include:
- Problems with memory and thinking clearly
- Sleep or appetite changes
- Appear to feel hopeless, worthless, sad, or empty
- Loss of interest in things previously enjoyed
- Restlessness
- Irritability
- Anger or defensiveness
- Withdrawing socially
- Repeating certain rituals and behaviors
- Mood swings
- Changes in appearance or dress

Types of Treatment Services for Teens
As an option for parents looking for drug rehab in Clinton or relatively close by, Portum Behavioral Health offers several levels of care, detailed below. All treatment plans are tailored to the client’s needs, significantly improving their recovery outcomes.
Residential Treatment
The highest level of care available at our center is residential inpatient treatment. An inpatient program could fit a teen with severe substance use or mental health disorder. These programs take place in a safe, structured, live-in environment.
There are extensive resources available.
Along with having a severe substance use disorder, your child could benefit from residential treatment if they have a complicated medical or physical issue or are at a high risk of relapsing.
Much of the treatment program is centered around psychotherapy that takes a behavioral approach. The goal is to help teens improve by guiding them to the behaviors that will support their long-term well-being.
An example is the use of cognitive-behavioral therapy. CBT helps teens learn about the effects of their thoughts, behaviors, and moods. Teens can work with their therapist to spot habits that negatively affect them and create new habits to support their recovery.
Medication management may also be part of a teen’s treatment program at our New Jersey inpatient center.
Partial Day
Partial day programs are also known as partial hospitalization programs.
Teens don’t have to live on-site, but the treatment is comprehensive to the point that it’s similar to a residential program. There’s advanced outpatient support, and at Portum Behavioral Health, we also have gender-specific services.
The minimum weekly attendance in a PHP at our center is 20 hours, and there’s no upper limit on participation.
Treatment usually occurs five days a week, and a PHP at Portum Behavioral Health can include medical and psychiatric care and lab services if needed.
Customized PHPs can integrate family therapy, adolescent community reinforcement, and cognitive behavioral therapy.
Intensive Outpatient
Our Hunterdon County intensive outpatient program (IOP) at Portum Behavioral Health allows teens to continue living at home while receiving high support and treatment. It’s beyond what they might receive at a standard outpatient program.
An IOP lets teens keep up with most of their everyday activities. They receive treatment at least six hours a week, with a maximum weekly level of involvement set at 19 hours.
Teens will usually come for treatment three days a week, each visit lasting about three hours.
Outpatient Programs
Our traditional outpatient program is our least intensive but still highly effective level of care.
An outpatient program at our New Jersey teen treatment center is good for someone who’s already completed a higher level of care and has made progress. They may be ready to move down from something more intensive.
Portum’s outpatient programs are also well-suited for a teen who’s reached stable sobriety but needs additional support or is initially mildly affected by their substance use when they start treatment.
In our outpatient teen programs, participation is up to five hours weekly. The focus is primarily on non-medication-based approaches to treatment.
Outpatient teen rehab at our New Jersey center might include family therapy, motivational enhancement therapy, contingency management, and adolescent community reinforcement. As is true with our other levels of care, cognitive-behavioral therapy is also foundational.
We’re on a mission to end the youth mental health crisis through science-backed, human-first, data-driven treatment designed for teens.
Portum Behavioral Health is on a mission to help teens and young adults in adapting to the world around them, fostering a positive attitude for a better tomorrow. Programs Available at Portum Behavioral Health
We offer care levels at our New Jersey teen treatment center. Each treatment plan is based on the teen’s needs from start to finish. Programs and levels of care include:
- Residential inpatient, with onsite living. This is for teens with severe substance use or mental health disorders. The environment comprehensively focuses on treatment and recovery and is structured and supervised.
- Partial hospitalization programs. These day programs are similar to inpatient treatment, but teens can return home when their treatment day ends. They’re still very comprehensive and specialized.
- Intensive outpatient programs. An IOP at our New Jersey center is a step down from higher care levels, with some flexibility.
- Traditional outpatient. Our least intensive level of treatment is outpatient rehab, where teens come to the center several hours a week for additional support as they navigate their sobriety and recovery.
